Heating water for home use accounts for about 40% of a homes annual energy usage. A typical tank type water heating system is very inefficient and their standby heat losses account for about 20% of a homes annual water heating costs. There are a few things you can do to green your water heater however: 1) If your water heater is old and its time for a new one, invest in a tankless water heater, they are he most efficient way to heat water and will save you tons of money. 2) Get a cheap water heater radiant insulation jacket to keep the heat in and drastically reduce any standby heat losses.
