I read a book called Gaviotas, which was about a self sustainable community in columbia. Anyway, they had a very ingenious and supper simple irrigation system.
Basically it was a drip line type system made out of clay.
They burried clay tubes with small holes in the sides. These holes would swell shut when the ground and the clay was moist and when the ground was dry the clay would dry up and srink allowing water to pass through the holes.
This is a totally passive system that naturally irrigates when the ground needs it.
Anyway, just wanted to throw that out there because I always loved that idea.
