Throwing food in the garbage can not only makes your containers smell prior to pick up but you are also sending material to the landfill to create methane gas which is bad for the environment. When the food breaks down in the dump in an anerobic way the gas is created. Some landfills are capturing the gas to generate electricity but they are few and far between.

It would be better to compost your cooked food and food scraps and save the trips to the landfill.

I have always heard that its better not to compost meat and other proteins because they stink. They say that if you want a non stinky compost bin, to just use veggie waste and other foods, just not meats.

Was I misinformed?

The first and foremost you should make a habit of not throwing any kind of food in the litter. There are many people in the world who are starving.

I think we should not waste the food and we should only cook the food as much needed. We should avoid the habit of throwing the food as it mixes with soil and the methane gas which is dangerous for environment is produced.

Composting is a good way for you to reduce the amount of food thrown away, as many types of food scraps, along with leaves and yard waste trimmings, can be combined in your backyard compost bin to create a valuable soil additive for your lawn and garden. That is recycling at its best! There is a bonus, too, as the finished compost can help improve your soil or be used as a mulch around plants.

Composting is a good way of reducing the amount of food thrown away. When food waste is combined with leaves and compost bin waste, it can be used as a valuable soil additive to your garden. I do it all the time and it works perfectly for me.

We got a small trash container that has a flip top and a bucket inside. It holds about one gallon. The container is black which is almost invisible in our kitchen. It ts the best solution we have come up with. Food scraps, coffee grounds, flower stems and cuttings go in and we empty every two or three days. No problems with odors or ants.
