How to you convince elderly neighbors to stop burning trash in a metal barrel? I am so tired of it filling my house up with smoke. No, there’s no rule against it here. Sigh. :(

Ohh, I feel for you! We had a neighbor that was doing that. It is not allowed here. At the time, we had called the fire dept. -and he told them he was burning wood!
Why are they burning the trash? Do they not have a way to get it to the dump? Maybe suggest a way for them to have it picked up so that they do not have to do that.

We burn our leaves but that’s because the other neighbors do it too and we figured it’s a good idea.
Trash? Bad idea.
You may have to just tell them it’s a problem, maybe they will buy a fan and blow it the other way!

Well, here is a way that you can get yourself involved.  Start up a petition in your town or area and get the politicians involved in passing a by-law that prevents burning “anything” including leaves, wood or trash.

No matter what is burned it pollutes the air and all burning in metal containers should be stopped.

You have a very real reason to be the one to make a difference.  It only takes one person to start and you would be very surprised to see how many people follow.  I’m sure that you are not the only one who has this kind of problem so start talking to people and find out who would be willing to help you get a petition going and keep it going.

Unfortunately many people are too set in their ways to really care what other people think. It is something that really irritates me though - the last thing you want is your washing smelling of smoke and whatever else unpleasant they’ve been burning.

Your first port of call would be a polite request, perhaps tell them that it’s bad for the environment and they could cut down drastically on their waste by recycling. It probably won’t work and might even get thrown back in your face, but at least you tried.

Failing that, your only other option would be a petition or to complain to the authorities on health and safety grounds. It’s a long shot but if there are no laws against it where you are then you’re limited as to what you can do.

Have you tried sitting down with them and asking them nicely?

Tell them how it fills your house up with smoke and what an inconvenience it is.

My philosophy is try to be nice first and see what comes of it.

Sometimes we burn our leaves in our backyard. Is this bad? I hope not. But we never burn our trash. Our trash gets picked up every week.

Do you think your neighbors are difficult to talk with? Just give it a try!

What is even the point of that?  Yeah, yeah, landfill, blah, blah, blah.  But burning trash?  Isn’t that just an accident waiting to happen?  I practically get burned just lighting a candle.

We have burn bans here.  Unfortunately too many people ignore them.

I am sure that if they are elderly they are not aware of any other options. A long time ago it was very popular to burn your trash, I remember that my mother did that when I was very young. it was very common.

maybe they just need to be taught about the other methods of disposing of their trash.

And every spring around here, people burn off the old grass in their yards and sometimes it leads to brush fires and gets quite exciting. However, burn barrels are not allowed in town.

You know it is always a personal thing to someone. What is the city ordinance on burning. If the city says they can do it, there is not much you will be able to do. Whether right or wrong.

Recently, not too far away, there was a man who was annoyed that the garbage people didn’t pick up some large cardboard he had put out. I’m guessing he hadn’t followed the directions on how to bundle it for pick-up. Anyway, he decided to burn it in his driveway because he didn’t have a barrel and never thought “Hey, I shouldn’t burn stuff on windy days” and ended up with his house burned to the ground. Shouldn’t have burned the cardboard!

Ouch, that sucks man. I have a neighbor around here, well, they aren’t really neighbors, they live down the street. Anyway, they burn their leaves every year and it drives everyone around here nuts because it makes a lot of smokes. Nothing we can do about it, however.

OMG, I guess he didn’t realize it was that windy.  Our area has a not burning law.  It is hard to change habits of people.  Good luck.

Your not allowed to burn leaves in a public area, but somehow, someway, people get away with it!  We have the same problem where I live.  They don’t tend to burn them in trash cans rather than huge pits like a bonfire.
