I know one of the local non profit places in our area considered going solar when they build their new buildings. They determined it was too expensive for them though.
Unsurprising really - solar power is still reasonably expensive, particularly for a non-profit organisation who need as much funding for their day to day running as they can get.
It’s a shame more grants aren’t available to those wanting to take the more energy efficient route, particularly organisations who may struggle to cover initial costs.
Agreed-more help is needed. There are problems that have to be overcome when using solar power-namely the need for a large surface on which to put the panels. But panels are getting MUCH more efficient nowadays than 20 years ago, and so the problem is reducing.
There are of course ways around this, if you get creative. Such things as enclosing your parking areas, and putting panels on the roof and so on.
A lot of houses, particularly in rural areas, are starting to integrate solar panels into their rooves. It still isn’t quite at the stage they can produce enough energy to power the entire home, but it does make a valuable contribution and cut down on fuel bills.
Nice idea on the enclosed parking lot by the way - Plenty of surface area there.
