Green ways to travel?

What are the most environmentally friendly ways to travel? Naturally if you’re only going to the shops, walking or cycling is the way to go. However, what about if you want to travel a few hundred miles on vacation?

I’m assuming transport such as ferries or trains are more environmentally friendly than cars based on emissions per person, though I’ve not got any figures.

Any ideas on alternative transport?

I think when alternatives to automobiles are not an option, people should try to carpool when they can.  In addition, they can make their trips out more effective rather than driving all the time.

I think that forms of mass transit would be the best option.  Instead of driving your own car a few hundred miles, for example, it would be better to take a bus with a large group.  I’m not sure what could be done when an airplane is necessary, though.

Good suggestions, particularly that of carpooling. I believe it’s quite big in the US but not so much here in the UK - You wouldn’t believe how many empty seats there are sat in queues across London.

As for where aeroplanes are required, the only real alternative I can see is rail where possible. Transatlantic it is possible to travel via ship, though that is fairly expensive and inevitably much slower. Once you’re on continent though, it’s usually possible to get to pretty much anywhere you want by rail and it isn’t all that slow a method of travel these days.

I wish they did a little better on public transportation where I am. Everything is a little too spaced out and not enough transportation to reach out so everyone has to rely on a car.

Mass public transport is the best option. This considerable reduces the consumption of oil and also the emission to great extent.

In Toronto we have car pooll lanes during the rush hours on main streets and highways.  They are ex’d out lanes and if you want to travel them you have to have at least 2-3 passengers in your automobile or else you end up in the endless lines of traffic.

Now in a way I agree with this but in another way I don’t.  These special lanes hardly have any traffic in them because most people take their car with no one else in them.  Therefore what happens is that we have traffice jams where cars sit and idle for 10-15 minutes at a time which is polluting the air worse than it did before when they could use all the lanes and therefore get where they were going faster and not having to sit and idle which actually emmits more fumes than when driving.

It does seem that the train or the bus would be the way to go to be environmently friendly.

If you happen to have a ship, like an old pirate ship, that would be the best since it just uses wind, as they had not fuel back then. But since you probably don’t you should either take the bus or a train. I’m thinking a train would be better, but I’m not 100% sure on that one.

I don’t have a care of my own yet, so I’ve resorted to carpooling with people and especially using public buses.  They really aren’t as bad as some people claim them to be, and it’s much more environmentally friendly to carry a large number of passengers to their destination instead of everyone using cars.

A great way to travel “green” is to carpool.  A lot of people go on vacation and travel without a full car.  If you decide to travel with larger groups, you can save money on gas as well.  I personally try and plan vacations that are close to my home. There are always great places to take vacations locally, but you have to know where to look.
