Save energy in our office

i met somebody today and he told me that in his office the manager changed all the computers and fax machines with green friendly ones. he also told me that the new computers use 15 watts or less and the fax machines not only they use less energy but they are also better because the “green” system prevents heating.
he also told me that they expect a new wave of “green” water coolers and printers.
i think this is a great investment, although they are a little bit expensive they sure cover the cost or even more on long term.

Wow this is great.  My monitor is a true energy saver and it was pretty cheap so i don’t think they are very expensive. It’s the first time I hear about computers that save energy and I have two computers and they are on 24 hour a day, 7 days a week so my energy costs are pretty high. I think I will soon buy a computer that saves energy but I never saw one so first I have to do some research. It will sure save a lot of energy.rolleyes

Am I correct in assuming that even an older monitor would use less electricity if you use a blank screen saver that’s set to come on more quickly?

Also I’m often surprised to see computers and monitors still running through office windows after hours.

I think he may have been overly optimistic when he mentioned 15 watts - I wish mine only consumed that much power!

Having said that, it’s good that he’s taken the step towards becoming more energy efficient. There are much lower power machines and monitors available on the market, and if every office in the world were to use them and adopt greener strategies to save power, well, you can imagine just how much energy would be saved.

The number of office lights and PC’s still on at night is alarming, though I think more people are making a bigger deal about this and crucially turning off machines when not in use.

Though ignorance is not an excuse, I think the real criminals are the Governments for not taking the threat of global warming and so forth as seriously as they should have done. Only now when the effects are really starting to show are they (finally) pulling their fingers out and promoting energy efficient living.

Cobalt, your comments are a little contradictory. On one thread you are saying that you are not sure you agree with a high level of government emissions control, and yet here you blame them for not doing enough. You cannot have it both ways.

I cannot see how any PC could run on 15w. And Ricardo, the best bet is to set your PC to power off the monitor rapidly, not to use a screensaver.

It should be said that you dont need to buy a specific monitor or pc for these reasons, almost any reasonably modern machine will have the capability for power-saving when used with the right operating system,by that I mean anything from windows 98 onwards will allow you to not only power down your monitor but also the hard disks as well

Would be great if more companies would follow suit and do the same. Every little bit does help.
Just knowing that individuals are thinking this way is promising.

it is always great to hear when technology is trying to do its part. As long as people are aware and working in the field things will get better. One day we will all be surprised at how far we have come in the quest to help our planet and conserve.

Hey I want one of those. I have never even heard of them. I will have to do some research and see how we can implement this type of system.

I have never heard of this technology but it does sound like something we should all be concerned with including how to dispose of the machines in environmently safe manner.

I think when you begin to green your business operations, you are helping to reduce global warming pollution, protect forests and biodiversity, and this is to keep air and water clean.

Thats really good and economic way of saving energy indirectly conserving it!
Eco-friendly appliances are the only way of saving energy in an efficient manner.
This system should be used in homes also!
