When you aren’t using an appliance, or something unplug it.

On the mythbusters they said even when something is off it can use up to 40% of the electricity it uses while its on.

Well the current keeps going until it hits the off switch, so I guess there are normally things before the off switch like LEDs to show its plugged in or clocks or something.

My coffee machine has a little clock, and my computer monitor has a little flashing LED even when its off. My computer has a little blue LED when its off. My power bars have LEDS.

It might also just be the current going to and from the appliance.

That is ridiculous. I am definitly going to unplug a lot more things when I am not using them for now on. I could probably save a lot of money over time.

How does it use electricity even when it’s not being used?

For example, my phone charger is plugged into an outlet right now… how could it possibly be using electricity?

well its not every device, its things like CD players, VCR’s, DVD players, basically anything with a clock or led light that stays illuminated even when it is turned off. All of those clocks, LEDs and displays eat up alot of energy because they are on all of the time.

What about video game systems? I have several? Do those still use power when they are turned off? Some of them have a red light on when the system is off.

well if any light is on then it is using power.
One thing you might consider, is to plug all those types of things into one of those power strips where you have access to the on/off button on the power strip.
When your donw for the night just turn off the entire power strip.

Instead of using a digital alarm clock you could get one of those ones you wind up at night.

I agree that we should unplug appliances that are not in use especially if they have still their lights on after you turned off their powers. Because those lights are still consuming energy. Maybe not as much as when the appliances are but still it saves a little. We do the laundry only twice a week to avoid using our washing machine every now and then.

It is amazing all the little things that we use that are using power even when they are off.  I prefer to unplug applicances to make sure they are off.

Even if it doesn’t have LEDs the electricity could still be going through it.

To make it easier to unplug ever thing you could get a couple power strips, and just flip its switch.

Well, you learn something new everyday!  I guess I never really thought about how much energy is used when an object is merely turned off.  At least I don’t have one of those plug-in alarm clocks.  I have the annoying, bell-ringing one.  :D

When you save electricity, you are not oly saving on energy but you are also saving money which you can use for something else. remove the plug of appliances that are not used. That should do it.

You will all definitely save up on electricity if you unplug your appliances when not in use, besides this will also help preserve your appliances in times when there is a power disruption and such. I always make it a point not to leave any appliances plugged when not in use…and i save more energy, my electric bill is way lower than my neighbors. ^^
