My son gave me this tip about saving water in your toilet tank. Take a 1 liter bottle, fill it with sand, get the cap on good and put it in the toilet tank. This will save on the amount of water that enters the tank. It shouldn’t overflow because it senses when the water reaches a certain level. Has anyone tried this trick?

    No but I can say that is a very good idea ! Ingenious boy! yes it will not overflow ... there is a floater conected to a tap inside the tank. Th efloater always stays on top of the water and when the water rises in the tank the floater floats up with it closing the water flow at the same time ... so you can try it with no risks ... !
 

Yeah I’ve heard this tip before and it’s a great way to save a little water each and every time you flush.

It might not sound like a lot, but when you consider the amount of water wasted on a typical day, you will see that it soon mounts up. Even if you only save an extra litre or two a day, it all helps and if everyone did it…

Cute thing! haha! I started saving water by closing the tap while i make other activities. Like while i am bruhing teeth, i close the tap!
And we are also saving a part of the water from the washing machine for toillet purposes! I say a part of it because i don’t have where to save it all.

Hmm, i never thought about that. It’s a great ideea but if we can only teach other people to do that it would be great. I think I’m gonna try that thing tomorrow(hope my bf will help me set it) and I will tell you what happens.
Can anything bad happen if I fail or something?(hope nothing explodes)

the only bad thing that can happen while you set it is to get all wet

I made it!!! I took a plastic bottle with sand and put it in the toilet tank. Nothing bad happens because the floater always stays on top and it works. I can’t believe it! And you can adjust the amount of water by changing the bottle with a smaller or a bigger one. I think your son is a genius.

That is a good idea…I remember when people used to talk about putting a big rock in their tank. It all works! I really need to get into the habit of conserving water, we take long showers!

We tried this, but this house is very funny. The pipes that were fitted were none standard-too narrow. We kept blocking the loo by using the water saving and so had to take it out.

In our home, shorter showers is what we have to work on the most! Although my 2 little boys will often shower together (they are 3 and 7) this seems to save a bit of water usage.
I would like to think of a way to collect the water that is running while waiting for it to warm up for a shower!

Now THAT we do! We run it into a large bucket, and will use it to flush the toilet a time or two. If you have a nice sized bucket, it’s really not hard to do-I just run it out of the tap to warm up instead of the shower, thus solving the aiming issue.

just curious since i may be able to use that idea…how do you flush the toilet with the extra water? Do you put it in with the water already in it? I suppose since you have narrow pipes not a lot of it goes into the toilet…?

No… if you put a bucket of water in the toilet bowl when you are done it will automatically flush itself and not empty the tank at all.

It has to be enough to reach a certain height in the bowl and then it will just go away with gravity.  It is an excellent idea.

Also another idea is to glue pieces of styrofoam to the inside of the toilet tank to make it smaller.  That too will allow less water into the tank for flushing with. 

The bottle with the sand in it is a great idea as long as it is heavy enough to not fall over.  This will disburse the area where water would have been and is a great money saver.

If you are in the process of redecorating your washrooms and replacing the toilet they make water saving toilets now that are a little smaller and this definitely helps to prevent the overuse of water.

And we waste so much water, especially in the bathroom.

Here’s another thing that I do. Sometimes I save the water I use for washing my hair in a bucket. I use that water to flush my toilet.

My way of conserving a little water where the toilet is concerned is to not flush each time unless it’s necessary. I brush my teeth in the shower while I wait for the water to warm up instead of warming the water then getting in and warming the water separately to brush my teeth in the sink.
