The time is coming when we will not be able to live without air conditioning. Given that that is the case, what would be the lesser of two evils-three rooms with window air conditioners, or just running the central air? It seems that although the power to run the smaller units might be less, they would be working harder because we would be in and out of the rooms, and so central might just as well go on.

We already have the units installed, which is why I am asking.

I think that running central air is the lesser of the two evils, for the reasons that you specified. The smaller ones would be working extra hard, I think, so I don’t think it would be any better.

Some people, believe it or not, use both.

I’d just go with the central air system, seems like it’d be most beneficial.

I actually think that central air might be more efficient so I think that would be find.  And it might be more economical as well.

Our front bedroom has a very high ceiling with a skylight.  The sun poors thru that skylight all year round.  The central a/c could not keep the room cool enough so we installed a window unit, we did keep the room door closed.  It wasn’t that much more costly for that one unit.

anniegirl, you might want to consider putting some shading elements on that skylight so you only let in ambient sunlight and not direct sunlight.

This should cut down on the heat gain that you are getting in your room. You might also want to consider getting some window film and applying that to the skylight to reduce some of the UV rays.
