Do Your Children Understand?

How do you teach your children why you’re different and do some things? My daughter came home from school this week and told me that some of the kids in her class were picking on her for taking her trash home. I recycle it all, so I ask her to bring it home.

I thought she understood, but this tells me she doesn’t cos she couldn’t tell them why she does this.

How do you help your kids with this?

Hi Single. I am sorry that your daughter is having trouble at school. My daughter is too young to face this yet, but even now I try and involve her in everything we do that might be considered different. She is two years old, and helps me taking out the recycling, she gets to turn off the lights as we leave rooms, she is always being told not to run the water for longer than she needs to wash her hands. She helps me sort the laundry into what cannot be line dried and what can, and we hang it together.

I think that only repetition will help. Talk to her at every opportunity about what you are doing and why you are doing it. Maybe she knows this already, but hasn’t the confidence to speak up?

Thank you Brit. I have, always talked to hera bout what we do. I tried to make her see, I repeated and she helps me always. But maybe you hit it, maybe it’s a confidence thing. I think I need to talk some to her.

I don’t have children yet, but I will definitely make sure that they are aware of the reasons why we are as environmental friendly as possible. I want to make sure that they carry on the tradition of recycling, conserving water, etc.

Thanks to a very special teacher, my daughter is very well informed about environmental news and such. I don’t think that most children do know enough, and even I wouldn’t know as much if it weren’t for this teacher.

Re: Do Your Children Understand?

I think it’s a tough call on this one… there’s all the peer pressure kids get from school and friends. They are always afraid of not fitting in, so I hope there is some flexibility in your approach with this. I think in the end it will teach kids to respect the environment and make them more independent and strong… but it is definitely a process, and having them on board by their own choice is important.

Sometimes, children really can’t understand what’s happening in their environment..
They cant understand in the sense that they have so many question in minds want to ask..
How this, How that, And Why is that,.,
