I don’t know much about bottled water versus tap water, but which is more environmental friendly? Is there a significant difference?

I don’t know if it’s any more environmentally friendly, but it has to be better for you than tap water, or so the thinking goes.

I think that some bottled water isn’t healthier than tap water. To me, it just tastes better than tap water, so I’ll buy it. I always recycle the bottles when I’m done, and I never waste the water. I’m just wondering if what I’m doing is causing a negative impact on the environment.

Ive actually done alot of research on this subject so Ill go ahead an pitch in my 2 cents:

First of all bottled water is not nessesarily cleaner than tap water. the fact is (Im talking about the United States) in the US bottled water is regulated by the FDA who do not “test” anything. They simply rely on the word of the manufacturer, they also regulate dietary suppliments, etc.. (none are tested by the FDA).

Tap water is a municipality and is heavily regulated by the government to meet very strict quality standards. In fact most bottled water companies get their water from municipalities, so you are essentially drinking repackaged tap water.

Many people say “it taste better” this is due to the fact that tap water travels through pipes to get to you home. The good thing about this is tap water will pick up needed minerals on the way to your faucet. It is not true that tap water has more chlorine and/or more bacteria in it. the fact is after quite a bit of testing, bottled water (of all different brands) showed more bacteria, chlorine and other chemicals when compaired to tap water.

Now about the environment: Bottled water is terrible for the environment.
Why? because they are in bottles made from plastic (which is made from oil) and these bottles generally do not get recycled, so they sit in landfills creating methane and other poisonous gases as they break down.

So, if you do not like the taste of tap water and dont want those good minerals then my reccomendation is to invest in a Good Water Filter . The cost may seem expensive at first, but just think about how much bottled water you drink in a year, hell it cost more than gasoline per gallon. A good water filter will save you alot of money over time and will keep out any other strange particles that could contaminate your water.

Thanks for throwing in your two cents. It seems like you have done a lot of research on the subject. I think that a good water filter sounds like a good investment. A water filter will be cheaper than bottled water, and according to what you said, it won’t be particularly bad for me.

I drink the bottled water for two reasons. I can recycle that bottle & I can drink fresh water. The tap water in my city is one of the WORST.

I am not convinced that bottled water is cleaner than your tap water. I have heard that it really depends on the brand. I think people just feel like they are getting better quality water when they drink it out of the bottle.

I guess you could say tap water is better for the environment since by drinking bottled you waste a lot of plastic that goes into making these bottles. And as we all know plastic does not break down well.

I heard that they have less then one person working to regulate the quality of bottled water, so it doesn’t matter which is better because bottled water is tap water in a bottle.

I would think that tap water would be better because once your done you don’t have a near worthless bottle.

Tap water I guess is more environment friendly than bottled water. But I believe that bottled water is more health friendly than tap water. We use purified water for our drinking use and tap water for the other.

It was recently made public that the pepsi cola company brand of bottled water is from the local water supply.  If you are already paying a water bill in your home then you purchase water in a bottle because you feel it is cleaner are you not paying twice for the same item?

Using a good water filter seems to be the answer if you think your water is not healthy.

A water filter is a good idea.  You are having healthy and safe water.  And I guess then you do not have to worry about wasting water bottles.

Very informative information on water!  I always figured that tap water was the healthier option, since it does gain more minerals in it’s travels through the pipes.  I never understood why people would spend money on water as well.  Spring water, mountain water, tap water, it’s all the same to me.

bottled water is nothing different between tap water. It is only changed because it to bottle. Filtered water is the best for me to use.
