I was sorting my trash the other day, preparing to throw it out, and it got me wondering what the rules are in other places. Right now, everyone here has a huge green bin on wheels for all organic waste, including pizza boxes (go figure that one out), bones, yard waste, and all compostibles. It goes out on alternating Wednesdays.

Then we have to use clear blue bags for recyclables—plastics, glass, cans and so on, with a separate blue bag for paper and cardboard (except pizza boxes—see above). Then we’re supposed to use clear bags for all other garbage, to make sure we’re not cheating, I presume and we’re allowed ONE opaque bag a week for “personal items”, which we’ve narrowed down to mean condoms, since the list for the clear garbage bag includes diapers and feminine sanitary products. Oh, and we can put old clothes and things in yet another clear bag. It’s getting crazy, all the sorting that goes on when we want to throw something out.

Anyone else have all this song and dance?

My apartment complex is very relaxed on the garbage situation. There are two bins - one for garbage, one for recycling. Of course, not many people actually use the recycling bin for recyclables.

Your system sounds really complicated. It could be stressful to do that much sorting!

It’s simple here too, just like Kiwi. We have on alternating Wednesdays a recycling pick up, which is all metal and certain plastic numbers. Every week the normal trash goes, which carries everything else.

This isn’t apartment house rules or anything so simple—it’s the new rules for the whole darn county. And it IS stressful. You never know what can go where, even with the list on the fridge. Box cardboard has to be bundled, cereal boxes can go in the blue bag, but pizza boxes go in the green bin   Used kitty litter and wood ashes can go in a clear bag, but I don’t know if they can go together—it boggles the mind. I hate garbage day any more. *sigh* I guess I’ll get used to it, but I think I need several more containers in my kitchen and THAT is a pain as well.

I live in a home, and trash (and recycling) is picked up every Tuesday. You only have to separate the recyclables and the other trash and that’s about it. You’re supposed to bag grass as well, but if it’s in its own separate trash can, that’s fine too.

I live in a so called third world country here everything that can be recycled is , all the trash is sorted by the collectors and everything that can be re-used is seperated and recycled, it seems only ‘stupid’, ‘backward’ ‘third world’ countries can grasp this simple concept

In our area we only have to sort the plastic, paper and cans.  We have two bins one for paper which can include boxes.  And then there is still the trash can.

In our complex we has a trash room where we have to place the glass, plastic and paper in one bin and the trash in abother bin.  The bulk is kept in another area.

we also do the same, we have different bins for biodegradable and non-biodegradable stuff.. it’s so cool that people go to great length to help us do our share in recycling and still there are some who insist on their ways and not follow them..
