I have those great old hot water radiators in my house and I use either oil or wood to heat the water for them (mostly wood, since oil is prohibitively highpriced these days). How good would solar power be to heat my house given this hot-water system? It’d be great not to be burning six cord of wood every winter.

Im not really sure what you mean.

Generally when talking about solar power, its when you use photovoltaic panels to convert solar rays into electrical energy.

There is also passive solar water heating, where you use the sun to heat your water, but Im not sure if thats what your talking about. If so go on over to http://www.hotwaterfor.us and signup to get that free guide, it will show you how to make a few different types of passive solar water heaters.

Another option is radiant heating using the sun’s energy. This relies on the house having large thermal masses (thick concrete wall) that collect the suns heat during the day and radiate that heat during the cold night.

those are all of the solar related heatig systems I know of.

Thanks, Adam. I’ll check out the link and see if it has anything I can use. Right now, I have a wood burning boiler to heat the water for the radiators. I also want to check into the possibility of solar/wind for electrical power.

Actually Asher, solar panels are becoming much more efficient in the recent years. They have officially broken the 40% eficciency mark which actually make them more efficient than a typical fossil fuel generator @ 17% efficiency.
You are correct about the cost however each year the cost of solar cells decrease by 5%. Another thing that increases the cost is the battery systems, so if you live somewhere where you can take advantage of “Net Metering” and pump your excess electricity back into the grid to be used later that night, then use that and cut about 1/4 of the cost.

For those people who cannot afford a solar system, then there are other options such as renting (see: http://www.solarpowerfor.us ).

Wind turbines are also great, but they are not able to perform just anywhere, they are generally only usefull offshore of close to mountains and hills (for their updrafts). I would’nt say that they are better because of the moving parts, in fact the moving parts are what make them not last as long. The more moving parts that a system has the more chances they have to break down. This is why I really like the “Americas Wind Energy” company, because they have come up with a design which has much less moving parts than typical wind turbines, because the generator is actually built onto the spindel. http://awe-wind.com/Products/TurbineConstruction/tabid/75/Default.aspx

All in all solar is the best form of clean energy in my opinion, and as the price comes down you will see it used everywhere.

I also admire the Solar heater only to others. This is so because buying solar heaters is a one time investment, and since it is very safe and eco-friendly. So I do suggest people to mostly opt for solar heaters. In case if they are purchasing for the economical purposes, then they should opt for the simple ones. Rest everyone has their own choice, so you are free to make you own choice too.
