Isn’t it cost prohibitive to install solar panels?  I would definitely do it, if there were a real savings.  What I read is that it takes a very long time to realize a return on investment and that that the energy produced isn’t that great.

well prices are dropping by 5% each year on solar PV installations.  I say yes they are worth it, and here is why:

1: you produce your own energy so you are no longer subject to price changes and inflation. JD Power and Associates showed that electricity prices increased by 16% from 2005 to 2006. Now if we calculate a modest inflation rate of only 10% and apply that towards your current cost per kw hour, you will see how substantial this increase can be over 20-25 years.
Here are my numbers:
—-I pay 7.5 cents per kw hr
—-in 25 years with a 10% inflation I will be paying about 80 cents per kw hour.

2: If you buy a solar panel system for your home, you are increasing the value of your home. This increase can help you get a better home equity loan to make your monthly payments for the PV system less than what your currently paying for electricity.

3: the obvious benifit would be that your home is now carbon neutral.

Now if you cant afford to buy a PV system then there is a new option out there, and that is to rent. Check this site out, it will explain how the renting works: http://www.solarpowerfor.us/video.html

the energy produced isn’t that great.

I dont know what you mean by this, as electricity is the same any way you make it. If you mean not enough, you just have to calculate the amount you will need and buy enough PV panels to support your usage. It is recommended that you do a few things to your home first to get your energy usage down.

Hope that helps

We live in an all electric house with a recent 50% increase in cost of electricity I would not think twice about the need to have an alternative to the local company.  The use of solar panels would allow a homeowner to have a choice in electricity provider at a savings.
