Cloth Diapers

I noticed in the other thread that there was reference to cloth diapers vs disposable diapers and I really thought it should have a thread of its own.

Years and years ago when my daughter was born there were no disposable diapers there were only cloth diapers.  In those days there were companies that delivered and picked up diapers.

There was one company called Stork Diaper Service and they would supply you with 60 diapers to start with and a bin to dispose of them in.  You would change the baby, rinse the diaper in the toilet and put the wet diaper in the bin.  Once or twice a week, whichever you needed they would come pick up the dirty diapers and deliver clean ones to you, the same amount as you were sending back.  Now if you did your counting properly and kept track each time they delivered they usually delivered more than you sent back so you could skim off the top and put them aside until you had enough to use without using the diaper service.

I know, I know, this is bad but when you don’t have a lot of money it sure helps.

Anyway, disposables came along and all of these companies went out of business.  Wouldn’t it be nice if, for the sake of ecology, that these companies started up in business again and no more disposable diapers went to the dump sites.

Just a thought.

What a great idea.  I wonder if the cloth diaper companies will start up again to prevent the amount of trash that goes to the garbage dumps.

It might be something to look into and get it in motion again.  It is definitely better for the children I’m sure that their little bottoms are touching something soft and not paper everyday as well as helping the storage of garbage.

I know here where I live they have great concerns about where they are going to be able to dump all the garbage soon and they keep having to find new places to do it.

I used a combination of both with my son. When at home we always used cloth diapers and on the occasions we went out we used disposable, so that we would have have to worry too much about carrying dirty diapers around.

The cloth are so much better as he would get rashes sometimes when using disposable one.

This actually has a large thread already open,

But since you mention diaper services, let me just tell you that there ARE some now in operation. You really are looking at a zip code lottery as to whether or not there is one in your area, but they are still around.

Moreover there are an increasing number of companies that now make user friendly diapers, like Fuzzi Bunz, Happy Heinys, Swaddlebees, Wonderroos, Under the Nile as well as a miriad of work at home mothers who make and sell high quality, easy to use diapers.

No more pins, and you don’t have to use just prefolds if you don’t want to. Instead there are snap closure and velcro/aplix closure diapers, and a device called a snappi which grips into prefolds to hold them on.

It’s all come a long way now, and even celebrities like Madonna and Gwenyth Paltrow use cloth!
