Recycling in Apartments

One of the things I have noticed is that they will not take garbage away from the front of houses unless it is properly recycled in the proper bins and bags.

However, how do they keep track of people in apartment buildings.  I know that most buildings have recycling bins out by the garbage dumpsters but how can they be sure that all the people are recycling?  I mean if the building has 12 or more floors that’s a lot of apartments and no one sees who puts what down the chutes so how can they be sure that everyone is recycling what they are supposed to recycle?

If anyone has any knowledge of this I would be interested in hearing about it.

In short, they don’t know at all. I used to live in flats and we had communal bins as well as a card and paper bin and a bottle bank. As you can imagine few people used them properly - Fortunately people at least had the decency not to put general waste in recycling bins, but it was disheartening to see how many glass bottles and cardboard boxes were thrown in the general waste bins.

It would have taken less than 60 seconds to separate the waste but it seems people can’t even spare that these days.

I live in an apartment building, and we just have two general bins…one for recycling (“plastic only” it says, supposedly) and the other for trash.  We end up putting all recyclables in the recycling one.  I’ve seen maintenance check the trash for recyclables a few times.

In my old apartment building there was no recycle bin. I don’t think it was even optional. They had 3 or 4 garabe bins and that was it. Ofcourse I am not even sure if the residents would have used them if they had been there. The last time I lived in that area there was not even a recycling center.

Here, there is a trash bin and a recycling bin. They do not monitor the recycling bin, and even if they did, they would have no way of saying who put what trash in. It’s really not a big deal in the apartment complex here.

I don’t live in an apartment complex, but I do know that they don’t do enough to monitor recycling. Since they don’t really have a way of ticketing those who put the wrong items in which bin, they have no way on ensuring that everybody “follows the rules”.

Re: Recycling in Apartments

The apartment I used to live in, they had everything dumped into a big trash bin. No recycling bin at all, it was all considered trash. Hopefully they’ll make some big industrial bins for apartment complexes in my area, but I haven’t seen any at all.
