| I hate to seem a little dense here but what exactly is it? I haven't heard the term used very much and wondered about it. Is it based on living off the land or something like that? |

I have to admit I had to look it up.  You were on the right track in your thinking. It does have a lot to do with mirroring the natural ecological patterns. Here is a definition from wikipedia:
